The Hunters
Again, like characters, the best way to describe something like Hunters is by simply listing as much as you can about them in a small amount of space. What better way than a bullet-point list?
- Founded shortly after Earth-Space, the Hunters are a group of people from Earth who believe that Earth-Space and the Commonwealth were given far too much power. They have always existed under the noses of the larger programs, but only when ES moved out into space did they take their opportunity to strike.
- Hunters exist in every region of every nation on the Earth. They mostly consist of people who believe they cannot be told by the government as to who will and will not be allowed to enter space, and what life they should live based on test scores. They believed that matters of life should be decided by the people, and that ES and the Commonwealth have stolen this from them.
- The Hunters started out in space by taking over the first ever 100-man station, ISS-Origin, from ES control. Once they had the station, they had power to take down ships. Once they had enough ships, they tore the station apart and used the pieces to make more ships. Soon, they had enough ships to house all their people who had already been sent into space, and they started building. Now, the Hunters consist of almost half the number of ships owned by ES, and twice the amount of stations. They have enough room now to house every person on Earth who wishes to join them, and they've done a very good job at keeping this fact from Earth-Space and the Commonwealth.
- Hunters have attempted negotiations with ES and the Commonwealth on multiple occasions, and have been prevented from reaching their goals. Their main priority is to bring all of their people into space, the place where they wish to live, but ES and the Commonwealth refuse to allow these people even a chance at entering "the void" (what people in this era call space).
- Because they have been prevented from treating with Earth, the Hunters chose to go violent. They attack many recruit vessels that come out for short-term trips into space, and they take any who belong to them and often kill those who do not wish to join. They believe that since ES and the Commonwealth are denying their people the life they desire, they will deny ES recruits life in general.
- Most of the Hunters were trained by ES. They made it through the recruitment process and were selected by one of many Hunter operatives working within ES. Once they make their first mission into space, one of the Hunter ships comes for them and retrieves them, no matter the cost.
- That being the case, the Hunters are made up of scientists and military officers. Their regime is run by a man they refer to as the Admiral, though he is not a military officer. He is a scientist, the one who first posed the theories that started their splinter group.
- The Hunters' secondary goal is exploration. While ES and the Commonwealth have mostly been fixed on our own solar system, the Hunters have already made contact with two extraterrestrial species. They designed their ships to function more properly than ES ships in long-term long-distance missions, making them ideal for exploration.
- Most of the people who are currently a part of the Hunter regime still have family back on Earth, most of whom associate with the Hunters as well.
- The Hunters have no restrictions when it comes to people joining their ranks. Men, women, and children are allowed to join at will. Those who cannot or do not feel the desire to work in the labs or aboard a ship are given quarters aboard a station or ship and are allowed to live out their lives as they choose. The goal of the Hunters in this way is to prove that they have moved beyond what Earth does to their people.
- Recently, things have been getting more difficult for Hunters who remain upon Earth. They are looked down upon by others, treated as animals, and killed on the streets. Still, very few back down from their beliefs.
- Hunters in space are very aware of what is going on upon the planet, and they are doing everything in their power to retrieve their people before things go too far.
- More and more battles have been occurring between the Hunters and ES as of late, due to extra security ES has placed upon their recruit ships. So the Hunters contacted them with terms of a treaty. Most of their terms were denied, but a single fact was agreed upon and a form of treaty was signed. However, despite their assurances that the knowledge of the treaty would be spread across the world, the Hunters are aware that ES never informed Earth of the treaty's existence.
And that's the Hunters, in the briefest of views. Again, there's a lot more to it than that, but that's all you'll really need to know for the short story, and that's all you'd need to know if you were the one writing it.
Is this helping you guys, to see how I lay everything out before the writing starts? It's been a lot of fun for me, I'll tell you, and I hope you guys are getting ideas! I love to help you guys out, in any way that I can.
