Antagonist

Hey guys! What'd you think of Kaylen's character profile? She's one of my favorite characters, even though I really don't like her name. I've wanted to change it since I made the character, but she's a Kaylen through and through.

Today's character is the main antagonist of the story, the guy who's the antithesis of Kaylen Stevens... And I love him. I don't know why. I love him.

Characters

(part two)

As always, we start with the name:

  • Orlan Pearce, Warrior Class Officer in Hunter Fleet, Main Antagonist

Voila. We know who he is. You know the drill, though: what's he look like?

  • Black hair, military cut
  • Thick beard, tries to keep it trimmed but occasionally gets lazy and lets it grow out an inch or so
  • Piercing dark brown eyes, frequently bloodshot
  • Recent scar across his face, from above his right eye to the center of his chin (starts out thinner and straighter, ends deeper and more jagged)
  • Angular face
  • Completely physically fit appearance, despite lack of gravity
  • Broad shoulders, long legs
  • Approximately 6'1"
  • Always wears Hunter grade "flightsuit," insignia on his arm to indicate his rank

There might be a few gaps in there, but that's about all we'll need to know to start out.

Of course, just like with Kaylen, there's a lot more we need to know. For instance, why is Orlan our antagonist? What is it that makes him the way he is? Why is he working with the Hunters and not Earth-Space?

Let's find out.

  • Orlan was in the same class as Kaylen, in Earth-Space, but left the program before graduation. He always knew, however, that he didn't want to work with them. He believed there were too many constraints placed on the officers in Earth-Space, and therefore joined their enemy. (don't worry if you're confused between Earth-Space and Hunters, I'll get into that next week)
  • His current mission is to assist in locating new recruits for the Hunters, working under Cornelius Madhran.
  • Never married, because he never found a woman who could hold his attention.
  • He could've had high marks in all his classes in the Earth-Space academy, but he chose to keep himself to the middle of the pack so he would be less noticed when he joined the Hunters ranks at the first opportunity.
  • The switch to the Hunters came when his cadet crew was brought into space for their first month-long mission, thus leaving the program before graduation. They were overtaken by a Hunter vessel, who claimed anyone who wished to join them and killed the rest. Orlan didn't find out his fellow cadets were killed until a few weeks after he joined, and the scar on his face is from this event.
  • Although this is an early mission for him, he is very sure of himself.
  • He hates freeze-dried food, but he's adept at ignoring things he hates. He's had to deal with it his entire life, growing up with an abusive father and absent mother.
  • His people are his driving force. He fully believes in the mission of the Hunters, that all of space is their home, that it is theirs to explore and use at their will, and that they do not need to be always tied to Earth. He wants to find a way to get the rest of his people, those who affiliate with the Hunters, off the planet—but he has no idea how to go about doing it.
  • He's a little racist, but he'd never admit it out loud. He believes that everyone is, in their own ways, and that there's no way to eliminate it.
  • He hates the scar on his face, but he thinks it helps people to know what kind of person he is. He wants everyone he works with to know that he's not the type of person they can mess with. It also means that he doesn't smile very often, because it's painful to do so.
  • He's enraged. The scar only perpetuates it, because it's taken so long to heal. He's angry over the loss of his fellow cadets, over the role that he's been given despite his expertise in flight, and over his own decisions. He wishes that he'd found another way to get into space, without Earth-Space and without the Hunters. He's angry that no one cared about his departure from ES, and he's dreading ever having to go back to the planet where he was raised, but he knows it happens to everyone at some point.
  • He wants to be the first new recruit to bring in over a hundred recruits (assisted), and he's very close to doing so when this story occurs.

That's Orlan, the antagonist I love. It's not even that I love to hate him. I seriously love him.

Next up, the wildcard!
