Not-So-Easy-Peasy

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy to be a writer.

Nobody said it would be a walk in the park, a piece of cake, or whatever idiom you prefer.

Mostly, they said it would be difficult.

Being a Writer

Trust me, I'm a writer too. I know what it's like to be one of us, I know all the funny looks people give us, and I know how weird we're seen to be by the general public. I know about the late nights and early mornings, the deadlines and awkward schedules, the meet and greets, the readings, the editing, the fights with editors -- I know all of it. I've been through all of it.

And I'm guessing that at least some of you have as well, or else you wouldn't be here.

Thing is, even though nobody said being a writer would be easy, even though they all said it would be hard, there's still something we can look to.

Romans 8:28 (KJV) - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1. We are the called

Each and every one of us, we are the called. We're the ones that love God, the ones for whom all things work together for good. So even when writing seems like the end of the world, when everything's piling up around you and you can't even see over the stack of edits on your desk, remember that all of this will work together for your good.

2. We're doing what we were sent here to do

If you're a Christian, and you're a writer, then you're doing something that God called you to do. He gave you this gift, this ability to write.

By using that ability, you're fulfilling a part of your calling. Yes, it involves much more than just writing, but writing is a good start if it's something that's been in your heart. And when we follow that, when we write according to our purpose and calling, we're following Him into the goodness He has in store.

3. Even Jesus didn't say it would be easy

See? That pretty much means nobody said this life would be easy.

But I think it can be worthwhile. If your writing can touch even one soul and bring them to see the truth about this world, then isn't it worth it?

That's what we're here for, in the end. We're here to follow the calling. Even through the tough spots, even through the piles of papers and phone calls with editors and decisions that need to be made even though we don't have the brain power to make them right now.

We were placed here to follow the calling.

I hope you'll follow with me, if you aren't already.
